About the Community Coordinator Position
Overview
Community Coordinators (CCs) are part of the NSO Team! Under the supervision of Community Center/Program professional staff, CCs welcome new students to Stanford and plan/execute the NSO events for the communities listed above. The professional staff for each Community Center/Program select one or more students each year to serve as their community's CC(s). The specific events for which CCs are responsible vary by community. Undergraduate students who will be enrolled for the 2024-25 academic year and will be on campus for Fall 2024 are eligible to apply for a CC position.
Responsibilities & Timeline
- Spring/Early Summer: Attend a required CC training session with NSO staff
- Spring/Early Summer: Meet with community center/program professional staff to: (1) discuss and plan NSO programs, and (2) update and finalize Welcome Letter to new students
- Summer: Write CC "I Am Stanford" blog post for Approaching Stanford/NSO blog.
- Summer: Communicate event details and budget to NSO staff
- Summer: Recruit Community Orientation Volunteers (COVs), as needed
- September: Assist with Move-In morning and implement Community Center/Program events during NSO
From late spring to summer, Community Coordinators meet with their community's professional staff to finalize their summer Welcome Letter and to plan their NSO events (goals, program contents, budget and logistics). CCs will need to maintain contact with their community's professional staff and with NSO staff over the summer to adjust and finalize plans, address logistical needs, answer questions, and make decisions as necessary.
In the fall, CCs return to campus on Sunday, September 15, and prep and implement their community events during the week of NSO (Sept 17-22)*. During this time CCs will prep tasks, assemble materials and supplies, attend/facilitate planning meetings, assist with general NSO preparations, implement events, and continue to work with their designated community team until all NSO and post-NSO events have concluded. Some communities may also have events in fall quarter - please discuss with the professional staff for each community.
*ISOC CCs will return to campus on Friday, September 13, to implement ISO (Sept 14-16).
Because CCs are responsible for community events during NSO, they may not hold a residence staff position (e.g. RA, ETA) in 2024-25 or participate in any pre-fall programs (e.g. Sophomore College, Arts Intensive, SPOT leader). The time commitment required for being a CC and for engaging in these other opportunities directly conflict in September.
CCs will need to submit to NSO staff a final written report with event summaries, recommendations, and reflections by October 31.
Perks
Early Arrival Housing and Dining
One of the perks of being a CC is that your early arrival housing and meals are covered by NSO (the period before Autumn Quarter housing begins). CCs are required to return to campus on Sunday, September 15. NOTE: CCs must have on-campus housing for Autumn Quarter 2024-25 in order to be granted early arrival privileges. If you do not have on-campus housing for Autumn Quarter, but would still like to serve as a CC, you must make your own local housing arrangements.
Leadership Development
All Community Coordinators get the opportunity to develop a multitude of skills during their tenure with their respective community center/office and NSO. Community Coordinators work with their program's professional staff to plan events, collaborate with campus partners, and build connections with fellow Stanford students. Community Coordinators also get to recruit other fellow Stanford students (Community Orientation Volunteers) to implement events together to welcome the next class of new students.
Compensation
Each center/program will hire CCs as hourly employees through Summer and to the end of September 2024. Hourly wages is $18 per hour with a maximum of 10 hours worked during the summer, and 20 hours during the week of NSO.
